After her win, we asked Emily a few questions to get to know her a little better, and here’s what she had to say…
Tell us a bit about yourself
Hi, I’m Emily and I am the Engineering Operations Manager here at Connexin. I am a chatterbox and will talk anyone’s ear off given the chance 🙂
How did you get to this stage in your career?
I’ve worked solely in the telecoms/tech sector for almost 7 years, working hard and setting my own personal goals helped me to progress and improve. (being a control freak has helped along the way too!)
What is your history in the industry/job type?
I have worked in some form of telecoms or tech for the last 7 years, I love the growth of the technology and the constant improvement we can make.
What drives/motivates you?
Seeing how far I have come at such a young age, knowing I have many years left in me yet to learn and grow.
What are you most proud of in your career so far?
I am most proud of my input in the connexin network builds so far to date. I have had such a heavy involvement in the fibre team growth and also the rural team’s growth and expansion so when I see us smashing another target, going live in another village or welcoming a new trainee I am just so proud of us as a team.
How long have you been at Connexin?
It will be 2 years this year!
How do you feel about winning your award?
So proud, out of all of the awards the Team Player award is one that I would have most wanted to win. I pride myself in doing what’s right for my team and helping the wider team whenever possible. #GSD
What does your job role entail?
As Engineering Operations Manager I am responsible for the management of day-to-day engineering operations, and collaboration with colleagues across sales, service, and project delivery to ensure efficient working between different departments and the smooth running of the company overall. To successfully manage my team, I have a continuous improvement mindset, regularly reviewing engineering operations to ensure that these meet the required standards and compliance, and recommend changes where necessary.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Busy! Managing a team of 20+ Engineers and co-ordinators is hard work and means every day is different, but I love it! One day I will be presenting to our investors and the next I will be on a farm in the middle of nowhere surrounded by horses and pigs. What more could you ask for?
What excites you most about your job?
The room for growth and encouragement to make changes, as we are a growing company, we are flexible and encourage Improvement suggestions from anybody at the company. Giving people that confidence to speak out has given us some major growth and Improvement projects that have positively reflected on the company.
What first attracted you to Connexin?
I just wanted to work with the social media famous Alex Yeung… That, and I was excited to bring a broadband choice to hull and break the monopoly.
How does Connexin’s culture help you succeed?
No question is a stupid question, there is support from all angles and everyone wants each other to succeed so they are willing to advise and put time/knowledge into you to watch you grow. It’s really inspiring to be a part of.
What do you like most about working at Connexin?
The trust and freedom to make decisions in the best interest of my team.
What do you think makes our team culture unique?
Everyone is equal – even if you’re at the top and your culture isn’t meeting the Connexin Code you will be held accountable which cannot be said for a lot of companies.
Now the serious questions are out of the way, it’s time for something a little more fun…
Would you rather be the funniest or smartest person in a room?
Funniest, you can’t teach a personality
What three items would you bring on a desert island?
Bottomless Piña coladas, Nintendo switch, and a pair of sunglasses.
What fashion trend do you regret?
Dream matte mouse 3 shades to dark and the Primark Rihanna t-shirt phase.
What’s your favourite dad joke?
Lizard Lizard Lizard…. Is there a gecko in here?
What would the title of your autobiography be?
All about me
What is the weirdest fact you know?
A cockroach can hold its breath under water for 40 minutes.
Would you rather meet your ancestors or descendants?

Katie Muir
Laura Porter
