At Connexin, we pride ourselves on building an inclusive and diverse workplace where everyone, regardless of gender, background, or experience, has the opportunity to thrive. As we celebrate International Women's Day, we are reflecting on our commitment to empowering women in our workplace, and the industry as a whole.

Since April 2020, Connexin Academy has been at the forefront of providing comprehensive skills bootcamps and training opportunities, available to individuals of all genders and backgrounds. We believe in breaking down barriers, and that's why our skills bootcamps are accessible to anyone over the age of 19. This inclusivity allows women from all different backgrounds, with varying levels of experience, to kickstart a new career in the dynamic world of technology.

Amy started her Connexin journey with the Advanced Fibre Engineering Skills Bootcamp delivered by Connexin Academy last year.

“From having no experience with fibre whatsoever, Amy has worked her way through the Advanced Fibre Bootcamp and after a successful interview, secured her place at Connexin starting as a trainee engineer in June 2023 and has since been promoted to Acting FTTP Engineer,” said Andy Bark, PIA, Rural & FWA Engineering Manager.

“Over the past nine months Amy has grown astronomically both within herself, and within the business, setting a great example to others on her team. Starting with the bootcamp has given her the stepping stones she needed to join Connexin but it’s through her own dedication and passion for the job that has really allowed her to flourish and create a fantastic foundation for the rest of her career.”

To inspire other young girls like Amy, we have recently been participating in events such as Women into Manufacturing and Engineering, an initiative launched by Green Port Hull. Our recruitment team, alongside our female engineers, had the opportunity to engage with young women and introduce them to the possibilities within traditionally male-dominated fields.

According to a survey conducted during the event, initial interest in STEM careers among attendees rose significantly throughout the day. At the outset, 60% of girls expressed an interest in STEM careers. However, after engaging with us and other local businesses, this number surged to almost 90% by the end of the event. It's a testament to the power of representation and inclusivity in inspiring the next generation of women in tech.
