What Is
It All About
If you've
never heard of VoIP, get ready to change the way you think
about long-distance phone calls. VoIP, or Voice over
Internet Protocol, is a method for taking standard analogue
audio signals, like the kind you hear when you talk on the
phone, and turning them into digital data that can be
transmitted over the Internet.
So how is
this useful to you? VoIP has the ability to turn a standard
Internet connection into a way to place free phone calls
around the world. The amazing benefit of this is that you
are bypassing the phone company (and its charges) entirely.
IP telephony
just makes sense, in terms of both economics and
infrastructure requirements. More and more businesses are
installing VoIP systems, and the technology will continue to
grow in popularity as it makes its way into our homes and
daily lives. Perhaps the biggest draw to VoIP for home users
is its amazing ability to save on communication costs and
the flexibility and diversity of the technology.
How a call is made between two VoIP phones:
Here is how
a typical call would work between two Connexin VoIP phones
over a packaged switched
network.
1. You press the call button which sends a signal to
the ATA.
2. The ATA receives the signal and sends a dial tone.
This lets you know that you have a connection to the
Internet.
3. You dial the phone number of the person you wish
to talk to. The phone number data is sent in the form of a
request to a Connexin processor.
4. Our processor determines to whom to map the phone
number. In mapping, the phone number you dialled is
translated to an IP address. On the other end, a signal is
sent to your friend's ATA, telling the phone to ring.
5. During the conversation, your system and your
friend's system transmit packets back and forth when there
is data to be sent (such as voice). The ATAs at each end
translate these packets as they are received and convert
them to the analogue audio signal that you hear.
6. You finish talking and hang up the receiver.
7.
The ATA sends a signal terminating the session.
